Immersing myself to art and being surrounded by works of artists really brings out emotions that I can’t explain. I feel like there are not right words to express the whole experience of being able to witness works of renowned and budding artists alike. Sublime–I guess, that’s one way of putting it. There’s a sense of sublimity especially in works that really speak to me. This year’s Art Fair was able to make me feel this enigmatic feeling through some artworks once again.
I missed out on last year’s event but I was able to go to 2015′s and 2016′s. I’m glad that I was able to find time to attend this year’s Art Fair. After all, it’s all part of my new year’s resolution: to expose myself to more art events, exhibitions, and gatherings. I was able to go with two of my college friends, Regina and Zacc. We went on the first day of the fair which was on March 1st.
Probably one of the most Instagrammed works in the event is a portion of Maynila (Hilda Koronel-Bembol Roco) (2018) by Norberto Roldan. I wasn’t able to take a photo of the other half of this but it was even more amazing. My friend and I were staring at it for a few minutes, wondering about the story behind it. We thought it was a different artwork from this one that’s why we were so eager to learn more about it.
Sa Lilum (2018) by Raffy T. Napay made me pay attention to its details. This was made using thread, textile, and acrylic. I really love the colors of this one.
I love quirky things and the Veneration of the Lie (Sleeping Mughambhi) (2018) by Cesare A.X. Syjuco was no exception. I don’t really know why I appreciated this so much but I knew I had to take a photo of it.
The Drawing of a Single Line is Full of Adventure (2012) by Jean Marie Syjuco is an installation using mirrors and a plumb bob. It was a rather fascinating piece and I love the title.
Neon signs are such a trend right now but I was drawn to Pain / Jagged Letters / Waves / Sinking (2012) by Cesare A.X. Syjuco because of the different words that it spelled out. I’d like to give it some sort of meaning from my point of view. But I’d like to know your thoughts; how do you understand or interpret this piece?
One of the photographs that caught my eye was Lovers at the Palace Theatre (capture 1945) by Weegee (1899-1968). I can feel the emotions in this photo and it felt genuine and golden, in a way.
Kin by Neal Oshima is a collection of black and white photos of different faces and traditions of various tribes nationwide. It felt refreshing seeing all their different faces sharing a similar smile–something that is genuine and pure. I also appreciated the black and white contrast of the photos. It reminded me how much I love black and white photos and how it depicts so much emotions and stories, giving photographs so many possibilities.
Definitely one of my favorites is this sculpture called Intiquity Within (2018) by Anton Del Castillo. Though my brother and I went to the event during different days, he admittedly said that this was his favorite among everything in the fair and that he’s always been a fan of his works.
Easily one of the most unforgettable installations in the fair is The Art Fair is Full of Objects, More or Less Interesting; I Wish to Add 24,124 More Cars by Nilo Ilarde. I guess it’s obvious why, hahaha!
Last and definitely not the least, Imaginarium exhibit by Daniel Dela Cruz. It consisted of a number of sculptures that were whimsical and it definitely made me and my friends stop for a while, admire, and think. This is my favorite out of everything I saw that day. I wasn’t able to take a lot of photos from his exhibit but it was definitely something that I will remember. I’ve seen his works from the first time I went to Art Fair and his art style is distinct and poses a sense of wonder. It was so inspiring to be able to see his works in the flesh.
Art Fair made the creative in me feel inspired and fueled to keep on working and learning more about myself and my art. I hope that one day I’ll be able to create artworks or even a brainchild that I can truly call mine and showcase it to the world. Here’s to more learning and creating!
